"Where tanks advanced, one man ended them."

Legacy of Heroes shirts honor real heroism by telling the true stories of Medal of Honor recipients. Each shirt features a QR code on the right shoulder with a banner reading “His Legacy.” When scanned, it takes you directly to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society page, where you can read the recipient’s official Medal of Honor citation and learn the story behind their legacy.

EGACY OF HEROES | Pfc. Dirk J. Vlug

Some heroes advance with numbers.
Others step forward alone.

When an American roadblock on the Ormoc Road was attacked by enemy tanks, Pfc. Dirk J. Vlug left his covered position and moved into the open. He carried a rocket launcher and six rounds of ammunition. That was all.

Under intense machine gun and 37-mm fire, he advanced alone.

Loading and firing singlehandedly, he destroyed the first tank, killing its occupants with a single round. As the crew of a second tank attempted to dismount and attack him, Vlug drew his pistol and killed one of the enemy, forcing the others back into their vehicle. He then destroyed that tank as well.

Three more enemy tanks moved up the road.

Vlug did not withdraw.
He flanked the next tank and eliminated it.
Then, despite a hail of enemy fire, he pressed forward again and destroyed another.

With his final round of ammunition, he struck the last vehicle, sending it crashing down a steep embankment.

Five enemy tanks destroyed.
One man advancing alone.

Through sustained heroism in the face of superior forces, Pfc. Vlug halted the armored attack and greatly aided the successful accomplishment of his battalion’s mission.

This was not impulse.
This was not chance.

It was conspicuous gallantry, deliberate action taken under fire, step by step, round by round, knowing there would be no one beside him.

Our Legacy of Heroes line carries his story because men like Pfc. Dirk J. Vlug remind us that sometimes the line is drawn by a single man who refuses to move.

Where tanks advanced, one man ended them.
This shirt carries that legacy forward.
